Abstract

This article deals with Echo z Polski [ The Echo from Poland] (the title was subsequently altered to Echo Polskie), the first Polish-language newspaper in the United States, published in 1893–1865 in New York. While at first its pages were predominantly filled with news from Poland, it gradually broadened its coverage in an effort to become the leading paper of the Polish- American community.

Abstract

This artical is a survey of hitherto unresearched Prątka Jednodniówka [ The Mayfly], a magazine edited by the patients of the TB sanatorium at Bystra Śląska near Bielsko-Biała and published in 1931–1935. Five issues of the magazine stored at the Cieszyn Library were examined for their literary content, made up almost exclusively by humor and satire. The gelotherapeutic profile makes the magazine unique among similar publications associated with healthcare institutions.

Abstract

This article examines the tabloidization of Gazeta Polska, one of Poland's leading right-wing weeklies. An analysis of the contents of the issues published in 2020 shows that the magazine meets all five criteria of tabloidization, i.e. colloquialism, emotionalism, sensationalism, personalization and visualization. The findings of this article can be treated as a contribution to current debates about the ongoing tabloidization of opinion weeklies.

Abstract

Hobby magazines represent a segment of the Polish press characterized by an undiminishing diversity — as shown by their eye-catching presence on library and press saloon shelves. However, that subsection of the Polish media has so far attracted little attention from reserchers. The goal of this article is to examine the phenomenon of the hobby magazines in the context of the current market conditions and to outline a research plan of the field.
