Abstract

The article considers those fragments of panegyrics as to Russian saints that directly or indirectly go back to the Praise of Saints Euthymios the Great and Sabas the Sanctified by Cyril of Scythopolis (in Slavic manuscripts known as Cyril the Monk). There are two instances of a conscious appeal on the part of Russian hagiographers to the Praise, while these also employed the Life of Sabas the Sanctified by Cyril of Scythopolis in their writings along with mentioning the names of Euthymios and Sabas.

Abstract

In the Russian handwritten Tale of the Boastful Scholar, two themes are developed: the limits of human comprehension of book wisdom and the dependence of the posthumous fate of a monk on the time and circumstances of his tonsure. The Tale was first studied by V.I. Malyshev (1964), who published the only copy known to him; he concluded that the Tale was created by Russian Old Believers in the XVIII century. This article analyzes the previously unknown copies of the Tale, allowing us to revise Malyshev’s perspective. Based on the eight copies of the Tale from the early XVII-XX centuries, two editions were distinguished. One of them has a monastic origin, and its earliest copy from the beginning of the XVII century was included in the collection of instructions for newly tonsured monks titled Starchestvo. Another edition was created by an Old Believer scholar at the turn of XVIII-XIX centuries. The earlier edition is a didactic parable about the futility of human efforts to fully comprehend book knowledge. The second edition is a satirical story about the confrontation between two scribes – a true sage and a fake one. The opposition of true and false book knowledge in this edition could be perceived by Old Believer readers in the context of the church schism of the XVII century and the disputes about the correction of religious books. Another difference between the copies of the Tale is the way the problem of tonsuring a person facing death is discussed – an issue quite relevant for the Old Russian society. The episode of the Tale featuring a blue tit trying to drink off the sea is indicative of the author’s intent to combine the traditions of book narration and folklore in his work. The article contains also the text of the earliest copy of the Tale found in the Starchestvo collection from the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius.

Abstract

The article considers Lesya Ukrainka’s analytical and review work (born Larysa Kosacz – 1871‑1913) Notes about the Latest Polish Literature, published in the Russian magazine “Life” (1901, № 1). The writer chose not an analytical, but an analytical‑ironic “tone”, emphasizing the merits of Polish romantic poets headed by Adam Mickiewicz, as well as poets of the “Ukrainian school” of Polish Romanticism along with outstanding positivist writers (Bolesław Prus, Eliza Orzeszkowa, Henryk Sienkiewicz), without limiting these writers to populism, and stating their aesthetic tastes and ideological positions. The author pays most attention to the new Polish poetry, which had awoken “after thirty years of half sleep” in the age of modernism, in which she saw echoes of various “pessimistic movements” of world literature. At the same time, Lesya Ukrainka believed that Polish modernism had also its own ground, its appearance was prepared by the tragic contradictions of the Romantics, the collapse of the Polish szlachta ‘noble‑gentry’ ideals, and the degeneracy of positivist‑populist literature. The author pays most attention to the new aesthetics of Stanisław Przybyszewski and his manifesto of Polish modernism with its slogan of “art for art’s sake”.

Abstract

The article examines the gnoseological and ontological dualism of Lesya Ukrainka’s drama‑fairy tale The Forest Song (Лісова пісня) as a way of expressing the writer’s rational‑intuitive cognition of the world. The gnoseological dualism is expressed in the combination of intuitive and transcendent knowledge of the world with a practical, rational approach to the formal side of The Forest Song. This vision reflected the main ideological and intellectual movements of the time that influenced Lesya Ukrainka. The ontological dualism is connected with the dialectic of the civilized (profane) and natural (sacred) worlds, which are interconnected with each other on the basis of harmony and order. In the text, Lesya Ukrainka prefers the natural world, which prevails over the material values of civilization. The researchers suggest that such a philosophical and ideological component of the text is connected with the writer’s biography, in particular her correspondence with intellectuals and writers of that time.

Abstract

The study shows that the content of this dark poem by Osip Mandelstam, written shortly before his arrest and tragic death, is complicated due to intertextual, motivational and circumstantial contextual factors. The intertextual complexity of a number of phrases of this poem is clarified when compared with the version of the myth of the competition of Marsyas and Apollo, presented in the treatise of the Alexandrian grammarian Dionysius Scytobrachion (III century BC) and known to the Russian reader only from the drama of Innokentij Annensky «Famira‑kifared» (1906). The motivational complexity of the phrases (including the phrase theta and iota, the meaning of which is a traditional subject of discussion) is eliminated as a result of deciphering a number of intricate semantic transfers, important as far as context circumstanstances are concerned (being a result of reference to the facts related to the biographies of O. Mandelstam and the flutist Carl Schwab, who served as the prototype for the lyrical hero of this poem). The above mentioned factors of obscuration of the text implement the “focus on the mystery” (Omry Ronen) so characteristic of Mandelstam’s late poetics. The article presents arguments in favor of the fact that such a focus is not only Aesopian language, but also, in accordance with the style tactics noted by ancient philologists, the desire to elevate the style, to give the text a prophetic shade.

Abstract

The aim of the article is to analyze the motif of the road in the poetry of Gisella Lachman (1893‑1969), a poet belonging to the “first wave” of Russian emigration. It plays an important role in the constructed reality of her poems; the road appears in a literal and figurative sense – as a synonym for travel and an allegory of human life. It is used by the poet when she writes about interpersonal relationships, loneliness and longing for long unseen loved ones. Lachman creates her own “philosophy of the road”, to her being on the road is a metaphor of human existence, the formation of personality and the exploration of the world. Seen from that perspective Lachman’s poetry can be interpreted as a lyrical travelogue.

Abstract

The article concerns the ethics of memory in the book Karta rodiny [ Map of the Homeland] by Peter Vayl. The first part of the article examines the issue of the ethics of remembering in relation to the phenomenon of trivialising the memory of the Solovki prison camp. It is represented here, among others, by the picture of contemporary religious and con-sumer tourism described by Vayl in the Solovetsky Islands. A monument dedicated to the victims of the Solovki prison camp will be treated as a separate form of downgrading. The reflection on the monument is an important element of the criticism of collective memory, made in Karta rodiny. In the second part of the article, the author refers to Vayl’s assessment of the attitude of the Soviet writers Maxim Gorky and Mikhail Prishvin, who visited Solovki prison camp and wrote testimonies of this event, ignoring the truth about the crimes which took place in the camp.

Abstract

Over the past 15 years, a tendency to restore the forgotten or little‑known names of scholars and translators of the Executed Renaissance period has clearly been seen in modern Ukrainian translation studies. One such scholar was Oleksander Finkel, the first author in Ukraine and the USSR of a systematic academic work entitled The Theory and Practice of Translation (Kharkiv, 1929). The conditions for a proper appraisal of the work of this theorist, teacher and translator were to appear only a decade ago, after the reprint of the above‑mentioned pioneering work. Therefore, the aim of the article is to acquaint the reader with the most important theoretical postulates of this and other works by Finkel, placing the main emphasis on innovations in his views – both from the perspective of his time and nowadays. The methods used during the analysis, in particular the synchronic and diachronic, allow one to reflect on the general translation discussion of the early twentieth century that Oleksander Finkel participated in. As it turned out as a result of the research, the scholar and translator was one of the first in Ukrainian translation studies to formulate the linguistic theory of translation and was a consistent supporter of quantitative accuracy in the evaluation of translated works.

Abstract

The study is a retrospective‑analytical review of approaches to fixing female nominations in the Ukrainian lexicography explanatory and aspect‑based, and in particular, bilingual. Particular attention is here paid to the reflection of female nominations in the dictionaries of the 20th and 21st centuries due to their grammatical, semantic, word‑forming and stylistic characteristics, formation of the tradition of dictionary fixation of the Ukrainian female nominations as well as the problem of developing unified approaches to their lexicography. The parameters of description and comparison were as follows: the status of female nominations as separate units of lexicographical description, the nature of grammatical marking, peculiarities of semantic description in definition and illustration, indication of the nature of derivatives regarding the original masculine nominatives and their variants as well as a system of special dictionary notes. The study is based on the material of historical dictionaries of the Ukrainian language of the 14th to 18th centuries, bilingual explanatory dictionaries of the early 20th century and Russian‑Ukrainian dictionaries published in the nineteen twenties and thirties during the “period of Ukrainization”, explanatory dictionaries of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, neological, aspectal lexicographical editions, and in particular the latest dictionaries of the Ukrainian language.

Abstract

The article examines the specificity of the manifestation of active verbal aggression in Ukrainian phraseology through the use of the phraseoideographic paradigm. The typology of aggressive behavior of A. Buss and the postulate of the theory of argumentation and verbal aggressiveness of D. Infante are the basis of the research methodology. Analyzed are the classification parameters of active verbal aggression in the various communicative theories and practices. Specifics of manifestation of active verbal aggression (shout, accusation, demand, ridicule, criticism, insult, comment, gossip, slander, complaint, teasing, curse, blasphemy, indignation, destructive wish, threat, curse) in the Ukrainian phraseology is defined. The theoretical material is illustrated by a large number of examples. The context of using of a phraseological unit is considered as a conflict episode – a situation of communicative interaction of participants, during which contradictions are expressed. The study of the semantics, pragmatics and functioning of the phraseological units of active verbal aggression in the Ukrainian language shows that active verbal aggression is a complex system of interdependent mental reactions. These phraseology do not contradict modern knowledge of psychology and communicative linguistics about the studied subject, but at the same time the phraseological units form an independent system with the following signs: a) the state of the speaker’s dissatisfaction; b) a combination of verbal and non‑verbal components; c) intensifica-tion of manifestations; d) the correlation of the varieties of verbal aggression.
