Abstract

The article discusses "Rules for using the point rating scales for assessing the technical condition and usability of road engineering objects – second edition", which were introduced by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) Regulation No. 1/2019. The main objective of "Rules..." was to standardize the method of point rating assessment of technical condition and usability, and in the second edition, to take into account the latest construction and material solutions. Because the results of inspections are analyzed and compared not only at the regional but also at the national level, it is very important for all inspectors in the country to evaluate the technical condition and usability in an analogous manner. While developing the 2nd edition, the authors maintained the assumptions of continuity of inspection system, including adaptation to the inspection manuals, algorithms, and software supporting the management of bridges.

Abstract

BIM technology is not commonly used in the Polish bridge engineering yet. The article presents a case study of a road bridge made of prestressed concrete and built using the incremental launching method, modelled according to the BIM technology. The bridge with a complex geometry is located along the S1 expressway. Particular attention is paid to the development of the BIM 5D model created on the basis of a design developed traditionally in order to gain competence and verify the set goals. The process of creating subsequent stages of the BIM model is characterized synthetically, in particular the 3D geometric model with the surrounding area and additional 4D (time) and 5D (costs, kinds of materials) dimensions together with the software used. The article discusses the assumptions adopted for the development of numerical models and data analyses. The developed models take into account the assembly phase (construction) and the use (operation) phase, appropriate for the incremental launching method. The results obtained while using BIM technology were confronted with the results identified on the basis of a conventional design. Conclusions present the most important challenges and the achieved goals as well as the pros and cons of creating designs while using BIM technology.

Abstract

In the research of long-time operating road bridge superstructures, it should note that when the internal forces in the beam elements reach specific values, the stiffness of the cross-section of these elements should decrease. Besides that, if there are damaged places in the beam-element of the road bridge superstructures, the element could not work normally, and the redistribution of internal forces between elements in the whole system would happen. This phenomenon was not taken into account in the initial design calculation. In practice, it shows that many road bridges are subjected to greater loads than the calculated loads in the design process, but they still normally operate. This article proposes the other limit state criteria in evaluating the load capacity reserve of road-bridge superstructures using nonlinear analysis based on nonlinear deformational models of modern construction codes. The proposed calculation procedure is established to explain the load capacity reserve of long-time operating road bridge superstructures in the case of the lack of experimental evaluation. From the obtained results, the suitable limit state criteria for road bridge superstructures are suggested, and the conclusions about the accuracy of the proposed approach of nonlinear structural analysis are recommended.
