Abstract

This study utilizes semiotics to analyze Italian loanwords in Kyoto by focusing on their form and context of appearance. It commences by reviewing previous research on Italian loanwords in Japanese. Subsequently, a corpus of images featuring Italian loanwords, collected in Kyoto during 2022, is presented. The corpus serves as the basis for a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative linguistic analysis, allowing for a comparison with the findings of earlier research studies.

Abstract

This study explores the accessibility to foreigners of the information written in Italian on how to apply for a residence permit, considering the negative consequences that failure or partial comprehension of the texts could have on their lives. The results show, from the lexical viewpoint, how potentially difficult it might be to understand these texts: in the corpus used, only approximately 10% of the lemmas correspond to the CEFR A2 level and 33% of the lemmas fall within the basic vocabulary, as defined by De Mauro in the Grande Dizionario Italiano dell’Uso.

Abstract

The concept of 'diversity' is embedded in the learning and teaching of Italian as a second language, and increasingly emerges in everyday school life. By presenting an educational pathway designed and implemented within a multi-class context, the contribution seeks to highlight how the appreciation of linguistic heterogeneity, in a multi-ethnic group with varying abilities, can be transformed from a problem into a resource.

Abstract

Humor has ancient roots and it has been the object of study of various disciplines from sociology, to literature, to linguistics. It has been highlighted how it can have an inclusive or exclusive value based on how it is used. Ethnic comedy has been employed by migrant subsequent generations to express a sense of belonging. Exploiting humour, behaviors and attitudes typical of first-generation emigrants who have been the object of denigration by mainstream society for a long time, have been turned by young generations into distinctive characteristics of the group and elements of belonging. This article aims to verify how language in ethnic comedy is used by young people of Italian descent in Australia and Canada as an expression of identity. Therefore, shows by Australian comedian Joe Avati and some episodes of the web series Nonna Maria Canada will be analyzed.

Abstract

The risks of deceptive inferences and of inaccurate language production by foreign learners of Italian who know one or more Romance languages have not yet been sufficiently considered from the perspective of intercomprehension. Based on texts written by students with Czech as their mother tongue, in this article I will analyze in which ways this type of interference can emerge and propose some solutions to be applied.

Abstract

In our globalized society, effective intercultural communication has become a fundamental prerequisite. That's why it is important to support and develop it in schools. In this paper, we will present our experience at an Italian night school focused on tourism and business. Abstract

This contribution presents some results from a comparison of a sample of Italian texts, specifically those produced by native Italian informants, with: 1) on one side, a parallel sample of written productions by native Polish speakers; 2) on the other side, a sample of parallel texts produced in Italian by a group of Polish native speakers learning Italian as a second language. The presence of main and secondary sequences identified according to the Quaestio model is investigated, as well as the use of faithful and unfaithful anaphoras.

Abstract

This work aims to present pandemic Italian, i.e. the variety used during the COVID-19 pandemic. By analyzing its features, primarily lexical, but also morphological and morphosyntactic, as well as the semantic contour that characterises them, I will show that pandemic Italian can be regarded as a transversal variety in the Italian linguistic repertoire.

The paper aims to analyse the frequency of replacing the verb form «cantara~-se» with «cante» in 18th- century Latin American Spanish based on the data excerpted from the CORDE and CORDIAM corpora. This phenomenon will be examined on the example of subordinate adverbial clauses of purpose with the conjunction “para que”.

Abstract

In this article, first, we analyse the opposition of two linguistic models in dubbing in Spanish language – Latin American Spanish vs. Castilian Spanish – and consider the issue of Spanish lexical variation related to audiovisual translation. Next, we carry out a comparative analysis of the lexical characteristics of the two dubbing versions in Spanish language of the film Beauty and the Beast (1992). The analysis focuses on lexical density, marked and standard lexicon and the differential lexicon of both versions.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is twofold. First, it aims at problematizing the inhomogeneity of linguistic features belonging to the so-called neostandard Italian, often presented as a monolithic inventory of linguistic forms and phenomena. Second, it intends to set such a linguistic variety in the context of Italian language pedagogy, still strongly anchored to the normative grammar and to the canons of standard Italian. Specifically, some rapidly consolidating neo-standard traits will be examined under the following aspects: structural and semantic complexity, functional and communicative value and extension in today’s usage.

Abstract

The acquisition of the definite article by LS/L2 Italian learners represents a very delicate issue, on the one hand, in relation to the mother tongue and other known languages and, on the other, to the range of uses of this part of the discussion (among others, cf. Chini 1995a; Pallotti 1998). The research is exploratory, and the results allow us to examine a sector of applied linguistics and language teaching that is still little investigated (Krámský 2016).

Abstract

This contribution aims to show the results of a study conducted on the linguistic quality of the regulations issued in Italian by the Swiss Confederation and the Canton of Ticino during the recent health emergency. It has emerged that during those moments of crisis, the production of the Confe-deration deviated from its usual clear readability, resulting in texts that exhibited a certain heaviness and complexity. In the same period, the Ticino institution, possibly due to the advantage of being able to rely on federal legal production for many issues, instead disseminated texts characterized by exemplary simplicity and readability.
