Umownym początkiem tzw. ery kosmicznej było wystrzelenie pierwszego sztucznego satelity Ziemi 4 października 1957 roku i pierwszy lot wokół Ziemi statku kosmicznego z człowiekiem na pokładzie 12 kwietnia 1961 roku. Dziś rzadko dostrzegamy, ile nasza codzienność zawdzięcza badaniom kosmosu.

Czym właściwie jest planeta? Niegdyś, gdy znano zaledwie pięć takich widocznych gołym okiem ciał niebieskich, odpowiedź była prosta. Jednak niedawne odkrycia, zarówno w obrębie Układu Słonecznego, jak i planet pozasłonecznych sprawiają, że dziś trzeba ponownie rozważyć definicję tego terminu.

What exactly is a planet? Back when mankind only knew five roaming celestial bodies visible to the naked eye, the answer was simple. But the recent discovery of more and more planets circling our own Sun as well as distant stars has made it necessary to reconsider the meaning of the term .

We have now reached the 50th anniversary of when mankind first began exploring space - the traditional start of the "space era" came with the launch of the first artificial satellite on 4 October 1957, followed by the first manned spaceflight on 12 April 1961. Nowadays we rarely stop to notice how many aspects of our daily lives are derived from this half-century of space research.

Studying the origin of our own Solar System will lead us to better understand the conditions under which planets similar to the Earth might be formed.
