 abstract={In this paper I inquire whether Rawls’s ‘justice as fairness’ is a deontological concept. By arguing that it is, I place Rawls’s understanding of the deontological nature of his theory of justice in the context of the history of the notion of deontology. I argue that Rawls’s understanding of deontology is based on the choice of (inter)personal relations as the proper subject of ethics. To explicate this idea I draw on Rawls’s senior thesis A Brief Inquiry into the Meaning of Sin and Faith: An Interpretation based on the Concept of Community (1942).},
