Abstract

The article is devoted to contemporary studies on the nineteenth century memoirs written by Russian women. In the nineteenth century women’s memoirs were underestimated and neglected by researchers. Recently, there has been a signifi cant increase in research interest in memoirs written by women. This subject has been taken up by literary scholars, historians, experts on cultural studies and anthropologists. A. Bielova, I. Savkina, W. Laszczak, K. Kosowska, N. Pushkariova, A. Fieduta, W. Ponomarieva, L. Khoroshilova, J. Prikazchikova, A. Stankewich, J. Samofalova, O. Mamaieva, S. Tatarkina are among those who are interested in it. Memoirs are a valuable source of information about the epoch, historical events, outstanding leaders, event-making fi gures, Russian intellectual elites, aristocracy as well as the everyday life of the Russian gentry. They also provide some insight into the way female memoirists expressed themselves in their writings, their views on femininity and the role of women in society.

Abstract

The author studied 40 pages (letters Д–Ж) of the Dokładny słownik rosyjsko-polski, written by the Ukrainian-born Russian P. Dubrowski and published in Warsaw in 1877. After a brief profile of the now nearly forgotten lexiographer, the author adds a few additional questions to the known critical remarks about the topic of study and discusses – in the context of the state of Polish language generally and of the Kresy in the nineteenth century – interesting findings refl ected in this dictionary in the areas of spelling, phonetics, flexion, syntax and lexis. She found that the Polish language presented in this Russian-English dictionary rather faithfully reflects the nineteenth-century instability of norms at all levels of the language, so that non-native speakers of the language were more inclined to choose recessive over expansive variants, occasionally those supported by analogous forms in Russian. In the author’s view, the prospect of a comprehensive, systematic exploration of this source is promising, especially regarding the possibility of extracting peculiar lexis from it, in particular so-called lexical agnonyms.

Abstract

This article is historical and philosophical in nature. Its purpose is to outline the most important trends and problems in the 19th-century Spanish philosophy. This philosophy has not yet been the subject of deeper analyses, especially in Polish literature on the subject. This is a major oversight, because the nineteenth century is the time of the impressive growth of modern social, political, legal, moral and intelectual structures in Spain. An important role in their development was played by Spanish philosophers and their reception of modern European philosophy and science. The reception was accompanied by numerous disputes and discussions about the condition of the Spanish culture and its possible development directions.

Abstract

The greatest difficulty in translating Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy into another language certainly consists in rendering as much as possible the richness of diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic registers and linguistic variants present in the poem. The language used by Dante expresses the various tones of the vernacular, also making use of various idioms, styles and literary genres that are also very different from each other. The different components brought to light both on a phonomorphological and lexical level often settle into linguistic allotropes, voices which, while going back to the same origin and retaining the same meaning, are formally differentiated. The abundance of allotropes is in fact a very important prerogative of the language of the Comedy. The article, focusing in particular on the phenomenon of allotropy in the original Italian, analyzes and compares the solutions provided by nineteenth‑century translators: in particular, Julian Korsak, Antoni Stanisławski, Edward Porębowicz, and the unpublished translation by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski.

Abstract

The paper aims to give a comprehensive account of books by Polish authors published in B. Z. Milski’s publishing house in Gdańsk in the 1890s. Bernard Zygmunt Milski was the founder and editor of “Gazeta Gdańska”. The author discussed Polish books published between 1891 and 1900. Milski deserves all of the credit for publishing “Krzyżacy” by Henryk Sienkiewicz in 1900. From among various periodicals and supplements published by Milski only the book calendars have been described in the article.
