Abstract

So far, numerous studies have been published on the selection of appropriate maintenance tactics based on some factors affecting them such as time, cost, and risk. This paper aims to develop the TRIZ contradiction matrix by explaining the dimensions and components of each of the following Reactive maintenance tactics. The related findings of previous studies were analyzed by adopting “Rousseau and Sandoski” seven-step method to identify and extract the relationships between TRIZ principles and Reactive maintenance tactics. Thereafter, 5 Reactive maintenance tactics were replaced TRIZ’s 40 principles in the TRIZ contradiction matrix. Finally, the ANP method were used to extract and prioritize the appropriate Reactive maintenance tactics. The proposed matrix in this research was used in the desalination section of one of the oil companies to select on the appropriate Reactive maintenance tactics. The results of this research is useful for managers and maintenance specialists of units in making decisions to provide appropriate Reactive maintenance tactics for the desired equipment.

Abstract

The presence of the spare parts stock is a necessity to ensure the continuity of services. The supply of spare parts is a special case of the global supply chain. The main objective of our research is to propose a global spare parts management approach which allows decision makers to determine the essential points in stock management. Thus, it is important for the stock manager to evaluate the system considered from time to time based on performance indicators. Some of these indicators are presented in the form of a dashboard. The presentation of this chapter chronologically traces the progress of our research work. In the first part, we present the work related to the forecast of spare parts needs through parametric and statistical methods as well as a Bayesian modelling of demand forecasting. To measure the appreciation of the supply of spare parts inventory, the second part focuses on work related to the evaluation of the performance of the spare parts system. Thus, we concretize the link between the management of spare parts and maintenance in the third part, more precisely, in the performance evaluation of the joint -management of spare parts and maintenance, in order to visualize the influence of parameters on the system. In the last section of this chapter, we will present the metaheuristic methods and their use in the management of spare parts and maintenance and make an analysis on work done in the literature.

Abstract

Digitalization and sustainability are important topics for manufacturing industries as they

are affecting all parts of the production chain. Various initiatives and approaches are set

up to help companies adopt the principles of the fourth industrial revolution with respect

sustainability. Within these actions the use of modern maintenance approaches such as

Maintenance 4.0 is highlighted as one of the prevailing smart & sustainable manufacturing

topics. The goal of this paper is to describe the latest trends within the area of maintenance

management from the perspective of the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution and

the economic, environmental and social challenges of sustainable development. In this work,

intelligent and sustainable maintenance was considered in three perspectives. The first perspective

is the historical perspective, in relation to which evolution has been presented in the

approach to maintenance in accordance with the development of production engineering. The

next perspective is the development perspective, which presents historical perspectives on

maintenance data and data-driven maintenance technology. The third perspective, presents

maintenance in the context of the dimensions of sustainable development and potential opportunities

for including data-driven maintenance technology in the implementation of the

economic, environmental and social challenges of sustainable production.

Abstract

Maintenance is a key manufacturing function that contributes to a company’s productivity, profitability and sustainability. Unfortunately, many aspects of the contribution of maintenance to sustainability in manufacturing remain unexplored, and many enterprises are not yet ready to assess the maintenance impacts on their sustainability. Maturity models are useful tools for assessing maintenance practices; however, no maintenance maturity model that allows the evaluation of the contribution of maintenance to sustainable performance was found in literature. This paper proposes a model for assessing the maturity and sustainability of maintenance processes. The model outputs are: a measure of the maintenance and sustainability maturity level; recommendations for improvement to undertake to enhance maintenance maturity and, thus, meet sustainability standards. The model was applied in three manufacturing enterprises: the calculation of their maintenance maturity and sustainability indices made the maintenance stakeholders more aware of the need to implement effective strategies for more sustainable maintenance performance.

Abstract

By analyzing the individual stages of the building's life cycle, it can be easily concluded that the building's exploitation process is the longest and at the same time it is the justification for the construction project related to the construction of this building. In the course of the building's exploitation, various phenomena occur that affect its condition and thus the possibility of unlimited use. These are natural phenomena, as well as phenomena derived from external influences, which often lead to deterioration of the building's condition, or even its degradation. In response to these phenomena, maintenance, renovation and modernization activities are undertaken. Technical management is related to the identification of these phenomena, programming of adequate measures and their implementation. The conducted analysis of the results of the survey in the group of property managers allows to state categorically that the process of technical management is relatively little supported by IT tools and is still based on individual analysis and often intuitive actions. The article presents the possibilities of applying an innovative approach in the acquisition and collection of information about the technical condition of buildings, indicating the legitimacy of standardizing information forms and using them in building a database of cases of the CBR (case based reasoning) inference system.

Abstract

Maintenance involves a large amount of data management. Although many tools, strategies, and systems, have been developed to organize the maintenance information resources, SMEs have not found the same benefits as large companies due to their inherent characteristics and, above all, the maturity level of the maintenance department. Maturity models are useful tools for assessing the maturity of maintenance information practices; however, existing models are not suitable for any type of business context, as they required companies to have a clear organizational structure and definite informative infrastructure. Moreover, they do not assist in identifying and defining actions to reach the highest level. This paper proposes a model for assessing and improving maintenance management information practices. It allows a clear measure of the maturity of the maintenance information management practices in industrial contexts and provides improvement actions identifying the information and data needed to enhance maintenance management information practices.

Abstract

This paper reports the results of an analysis of indicators describing the effectiveness of actions taken and repairs made by the maintenance services in a food industry company which had implemented a new manufacturing execution system (MES) 10 months prior to the study. The application of the above effectiveness indicators plays a significant role in the rationalization of functioning of maintenance services. Therefore, it is vital that they are calculated correctly and interpreted in a way that has a positive effect on the organization of maintenance works. The paper investigates four effectiveness indicators employed by the maintenance services of the company in question, i.e., mean time to failure (MTTF), mean time between failures (MTBF), mean time to repair (MTTR) and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). The objective of the analysis was to verify the correctness of determination of the above indicators in the analysed company. In addition, the study was to determine whether the use of correctly determined indicators and results interpretation could lead to a higher effectiveness of the actions taken by the maintenance services department. Moreover, the paper presents a diagnosis of problems connected with incorrect determination and visualization of the above-mentioned indicators in the analysed company.

Abstract

The authoress wishes to discuss the idea of engaging senior citizens into the maintenance and care of historical park and garden complexes. The article illustrates the possible mutual benefits of the cooperation between the caretakers of these complexes and organized groups of senior citizens, who whose participation would be based on a form of voluntary help, through a foundation, or based on monetary compensation. Such a cooperation could lead to an improvement of the condition of historical gardens, in addition to providing beneficial effects to the physical and mental he alth of older people.

Abstract

The paper characterizes the status, trends and perspectives of irrigation in Poland after the reforms in agriculture and technology. Irrigation in Poland has supplemental character. It is used in short periods during the growing season and plays an important role in mitigating the effects of drought on crop production. Sub-irrigation from ditches is applied on permanent grasslands, sprin-kling – in field cultivation of arable crops, sprinkling and drip irrigation – in vegetable growing in open areas, micro-jets and drip irrigation systems – in orchards. Drip irrigation and micro-jets sys-tems are also applied in plant cultivation in greenhouses.

Under the economic conditions of Polish agriculture irrigation is often an unprofitable measure. The existing irrigation systems and facilities are only used to a small extent. After changes in the forms of ownership in agriculture, the large-area sprinkling systems were degraded. Small irrigation systems, mainly drip irrigation and micro-sprinkler irrigation, have recently become more common in private farms. Sub-irrigation systems are largely degraded and used only to a small extent if at all. In order to use these systems more effectively, it is necessary to reconstruct and modernize them. In many cases the factor preventing the use of irrigation systems is the deficit of water of required qual-ity and its availability. Besides unfavourable economic conditions, it is one of the main limitations in the development of irrigation in Poland.

Abstract

Planning maintenance costs is not an easy task. The amount of costs depends on many factors, such as value, age, condition of the property, availability of necessary resources and adopted maintenance strategy. The paper presents a selection of models which allow to estimate the costs of building maintenance, which are then applied to an exemplary office building. The two of the models allow a quick estimation of the budget for the maintenance of the building, following only indicative values. Two other methods take into account the change in the value of money over time and allow to estimate, assuming the adopted strategy and assumed costs, the value of the current amount allocated to the maintenance of the building. The final model is based on the assumptions provided for in Polish legislation. Due to significant simplifications in the models, the obtained results are characterized by a considerable discrepancy. However, they may form the basis for the initial budget planning related to the maintenance of the building. The choice of the method is left to the decision makers, but it is important what input data the decision maker has and the purpose for which he performs the cost calculation.

Abstract

The research aims to determine the effect of green maintenance “energy efficiency, health and safety risks, and environmental compatibility“ on environmental performance “environmental condition, operational performance, and management performance“ as analytical research in oil products distribution company by distributing a questionnaire distributed to 46 people. The research problem lies in the weak use of traditional maintenance technology, which negatively affects the environment. The research found that the research company’s reliance on green maintenance is weak in adopting new mechanisms and technologies to enhance environmental performance and the weakness of the efforts exerted by management in the field of environmental performance and the failure to involve its staff in training programs to create a culture of preserving the environment within the culture of the organization. The research recommends the need to use machines with low energy consumption and reduce the volume of pollution.

Abstract

Fault Tree is one of the traditional and conventional approaches used in fault diagnosis. By

identifying combinations of faults in a logical framework it’s possible to define the structure

of the fault tree. The same go with Bayesian networks, but the difference of these probabilistic

tools is in their ability to reasoning under uncertainty. Some typical constraints to the

fault diagnosis have been eliminated by the conversion to a Bayesian network. This paper

shows that information processing has become simple and easy through the use of Bayesian

networks. The study presented showed that updating knowledge and exploiting new knowledge

does not complicate calculations. The contribution is the structural approach of faults

diagnosis of turbo compressor qualitatively and quantitatively, the most likely faults are

defined in descending order. The approach presented in this paper has been successfully

applied to turbo compressor, which represent vital equipment in petrochemical plant.

Abstract

This study provides a systematic review of the existing academic literature describing the

key components of eMaintenance. The current literature is reviewed by utilizing a number of

academic databases including Scopus, SpringerLink and ScienceDirect, and Google Search is

used to find relevant academic and peer-reviewed journal articles concerning eMaintenance.

The literature describes eMaintenance as an advanced maintenance strategy that takes advantage

of the Internet, information and communication technologies, wireless technologies

and cloud computing. eMaintenance systems are used to provide real time analyses based

on real time data to offer a number of solutions and to define maintenance tasks. The collection

and analysis of appropriate maintenance and process data are critical to create robust

‘maintenance intelligence’ and finally improvements in manufacturing costs, safety, environmental

impact, and equipment reliability. This paper describes how the scientific discussion

on eMaintenance has expanded significantly during the last decade, creating a need for an

up-to-date review. As a conclusion, three research gaps in the area of eMaintenance are

Abstract

The Bearingless Switched Reluctance Motor (BSRM) is a new technology motor, which overcomes the problems of maintenances required associated with mechanical contacts and lubrication of rotor shaft effectively. In addition, it also improves the output power developed and rated speed. Hence, the BSRM can achieve high output power and super high speed with less size and cost. It has a considerable ripple in the net-torque due to its critical non-linearity and the salient pole structures of both stator and rotor poles. The resultant torque ripple, especially in these motors, causes the more vibrations and acoustic noises will affects the levitated rotor safety also. Practically at high-speed operations, the accurate measurement of the rotor position is complicated for conventional mechanical sensors. A new square currents control with global sliding mode control based sensorless torque observer is proposed to minimize the torque ripple and achieve a smooth, robust operation without using any mechanical sensors. The proposed controller is designed based on the error between the reference and measured torque values. The sliding mode torque observer measures the torque from the actual phase voltages, currents, and look-up tables. The simulation model has been modelled to validate the proposed methodology. From the simulation outputs, it is clear that the reduction of torque ripple by the proposed method shows improved than the conventional sliding mode controller. The overall system is more robust to the external disturbances, and it also gets efficient torque profile.

Abstract

In the present study, we analyse the influence of goal maintenance and goal change on the efficiency of executive control. Although there is empirical evidence on the impact of goal maintenance and task-switching on executive control, little is known about the consequences of changing between processing goals (e.g., speed or accuracy goals). We assessed the influence of changing between speed and accuracy goals while performing a task-switching procedure that requires social categorization. Experiment 1 included frequent goal changes, whereas Experiment 2 included one goal change across the experimental session. The results showed that both goals influence general performance and flexibility. A comparison between experiments suggested that frequent goal change (Experiment 1) resulted in worse performance and lower flexibility overall, compared to sequential goal change (Experiment 2). Frequent goal change was also associated with increased difficulties in pursuing the accuracy goal. The implications regarding the role of goal maintenance and goal change on executive control are discussed, as well as new research possibilities.

Abstract

The degradation process of wind turbines is greatly affected by external factors. Wind turbine maintenance costs are high. The regular maintenance of wind turbines can easily lead to over and insufficient maintenance. To solve the above problems, a stochastic degradation model (SDE, stochastic differential equation) is proposed to simulate the change of the state of the wind turbine. First, the average degradation trend is obtained by analyzing the properties of the stochastic degradation model. Then the average degradation model is used to describe the predictive degradation model. Then analyze the change trend between the actual degradation state and the predicted state of the wind turbine. Secondly, according to the update process theory, the effect of maintenance on the state of wind turbines is comprehensively analyzed to obtain the availability. Then based on the average degradation process, the optimal maintenance period of the wind turbine is obtained. The optimal maintenance time of wind turbines is obtained by optimizing the maintenance cycle through availability constraints. Finally, an onshore wind turbine is used as an example to verification. Based on the historical fault data of wind turbines, the optimized maintenance decision is obtained by analyzing the reliability and maintenance cost of wind turbines under periodic and non-equal cycle conditions. The research results show that maintenance based on this model can effectively improve the performance of wind turbines and reduce maintenance costs.

Abstract

Readiness and reliability is a special attribute of rescue systems (army, police, fire service), where performance at the highest level is more important than economic efficiency. For this reason, special attention is given to the process of renewal of technical objects. In such systems, a preventive strategy is most often used. Though this is a safe model, it does not always take into account the specifics of the use of a technical object. Moreover, in some situations, it forces the end of life of a device that could still continue to operate as intended. The article analyzes precisely such technical objects, removed from operation after just 10 years of use. It was shown that such approach is not justified and that modern management strategies must be implemented also in relation to machinery and equipment operating in rescue systems. The most important achievements of the article are the use of reliability analysis methods in the systems where it is not common, and the indication of the benefits of such analysis. It has been shown that knowing the characteristics of reliability, you can consciously control each process and make decisions in this regard based on the technical condition of the facility and not on instructions. In the case under study, this would make it possible to undermine the decision to withdraw the analyzed objects from operation.

Abstract

In an effort to achieve an optimal availability time of induction motors via fault probabilities reduction and improved prediction or diagnostic tools responsiveness, a conditional probabilistic approach was used. So, a Bayesian network (BN) has been developed in this paper. The objective will be to prioritize predictive and corrective maintenance actions based on the definition of the most probable fault elements and to see how they serve as a foundation for the decision framework. We have explored the causes of faults for an induction motor. The influence of different power ranges and the criticality of the electric induction motor are also discussed. With regard to the problem of induction motor faults monitoring and diagnostics, each technique developed in the literature concerns one or two faults. The model developed, through its unique structure, is valid for all faults and all situations. Application of the proposed approach to some machines shows promising results on the practical side. The model developed uses factual information (causes and effects) that is easy to identify, since it is best known to the operator. After that comes an investigation into the causal links and the definition of the a priori probabilities. The presented application of Bayesian networks is the first of its kind to predict faults of induction motors. Following the results of the inference obtained, prioritizations of the actions can be carried out.

Abstract

The publication reflects the current situation concerning the possibilities of using augmented reality (AR) technology in the field of production technologies with the main intention of creating a tool to increase production efficiency. It is a set of individual steps that respond in a targeted manner to the possible need for assisted service intervention on a specific device. The publication chronologically describes the procedure required for the preparation and processing of a CAD model. For this preparatory process, the PTC software package is used which meets the requirements for each of the individual operations. The first step is the routine preparation of CAD models and assemblies. These are prepared based on real models located on the device, and their shape and dimensions correlate with the dimensions of the model on the device. The second phase is the creation and timing of the disassembly sequence. This will provide the model with complete vector data, which is then paired with the CAD models in AR. This phase is one of the most important. It determines the location of the model concerning its relative position on the device, provides information on the relocation of parts of the model after the sequence is started, and essentially serves as a template for the interactive part of the sequence. The last two phases are used to connect CAD models with vector data, determine their position for the position mark, and prepare the user interface displayed on the output device. The result of this procedure is a functional disassembly sequence, used for assisted service intervention of a worker in the spindle drive of the Emco Mill 55 device.

Abstract

The paper presents the main issues of the management of electrical grids. Selected information technology tools supporting electrical grids maintenance are presented. In electrical infrastructure maintenance of power companies, geographic information systems are increasingly used to support the management of their resources. Their functionalities in terms of creating comprehensive databases for the electrical infrastructure of the power sector are described. The important information technology tools regarding spatial systems for supporting maintenance and operation management electrical grids and the conditions of their implementation are presented. This paper also attempts to present an innovative multidimensional evaluation of the technical and economic benefits resulting from the use of modern information technology tools for the management of energy infrastructure.

Abstract

Ladle plays an important role in the metallurgical industry whose maintenance directly affects the production efficiency of enterprises. In view of the problems such as low maintenance efficiency and untimely maintenance in the current ladle passive maintenance scheme, the life prediction mechanism for ladle composite structures is established which bases on the stress analysis of steel shell and ladle lining in the production process, combining conventional fatigue analysis and extended fracture theory. The mechanism is accurate and effective according to the simulation results. Through which, the useful life of steel shell can be accurately predicted by detecting the crack length of it. Due to the large number of factors affecting the life of the lining of the ladle, it is difficult to accurately predict the life of the ladle lining, so a forecasting mean based on the thermal shock method is proposed to predict the service life of the ladle lining in this paper. The life prediction mechanism can provide data support and theoretical guidance for the active maintenance of the ladle, which is the prerequisite for scientifically formulating ladle initiative maintenance program.

Abstract

The paper contains synthetic and analytical test results and model solutions for technical maintenance and wear problems of apartment houses traditionally structured. The crucial methodological aspect of the research is striving to minimize the subjectivity of expert assessment while technical investigation of old buildings. The cause and effect between the occurrence of damage to the elements of the rental houses, treated as an expression of the conditions for their maintenance, and the size of the technical process of wear of these elements was determined on a representative, purpose-appropriate, sample of 102 residential buildings erected in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries in downtown Wrocław (Poland) district. Rational maintenance of existing buildings is nowadays significant issue for their proprieties. Therefore, there is constant need to find a research method that may lead to well thought out building maintenance management. The goal of undergone research was to search influence of apartment houses maintenance on the grade and intensity of their deterioration. As to fulfil the research objective the group of engineers identified symptoms of the technical wear growth, which means performed identification of causes and effects responsible for the defects appearance. The range of the work demanded elaboration of a new qualitative model of detected defects and its transfer into a quantitative model. Therefore, such approach enabled to establish the reason - effect connection ‘defect - technical wear’ related to the crucial structural parts of investigated apartment houses.

Abstract

One of the factors that affects the safety of flight operations is to maintain the airport infrastructure in an appropriate condition, due to importance of proper infrastructure management, including funds and human resources management in particular. Currently applicable methods for determination of surface condition are mainly based on visual assessment of surface deterioration. An innovative approach to assessing the cement concrete airport pavement's technical condition based on the APCI (Airfield Pavement Condition Index) is presented in the article. The method of APCI index determination is based not only on the visual assessment of the airfield pavement's surface condition and the calculation of its deterioration, but also includes parameter of load capacity, evenness, roughness and tensile strength of the surface layer. The presented method can be used as a tool for forecasting the technical condition of cement concrete airfield pavements in the context of planning funds for future maintenance purposes. The impact of considering individual model parameters on the value of APCI index, basing on the results of field tests carried out as part of military airports inspections was presented.

Abstract

Nowadays, the main challenge in maintenance is to establish a dynamic maintenance strategy to significantly track and improve the performance measures of multi-state systems in terms of production, quality, security and even the environment. This paper presents a quantitative approach based on Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) to model and evaluate the maintenance of multi-state system and their functional dependencies. According to transition relationships between the system states modeled by the Markov process, a DBN model is established. The objective is to evaluate the reliability and the availability of the system with taking into account the impact of maintenance strategies (perfect repair and imperfect repair). Using the proposed approach, the dynamic probabilities of system states can be determined and the subsystems contributing to system failure can also be identified. A practical application is demonstrated by a case study of a blower system. Through the result of the diagnostic inference, to improve the performances of the blower, the critical components C, F, W, and P should be given more attention. The results indicate also that the perfect repair strategy can improve significantly the performances of the blower, while the imperfect repair strategy cannot degrade the performances in comparison to the perfect repair strategy. These results show the effectiveness of this approach in the context of a predictive evaluation process and in providing the opportunity to evaluate the impact of the choices made on the future measurement of systems performances. Finally, through diagnostic analysis, intervention management and maintenance planning are managed efficiently and optimally.
