Abstract

A widely held view of linguistic researchers claims that collocations constitute a difficult and crucial aspect of vocabulary knowledge. The above-mentioned view is reflected in linguistic theory and practice. Collocations are justly devoted attention by linguists as well as all the individuals who aspire to fluently use a foreign language. Nevertheless, the term itself remains a subject of controversy, since linguistic literature provides various definitions of collocations. The differences between various definitions are related to their contexts as well as purposes for which they are formed. The present article accepts the context-dependence of various definitions of collocations and aims to propose a definition to be employed for the purposes of LSP lexicography.

Abstract

An increased use of global navigation techniques for positioning, and in particular for height determination, led to a growing need for precise models of height reference surface, i.e. geoid or quasigeoid. Geoid or quasigeoid heights at a cm accuracy level, provided on growing number ofGPS/levelling sites, can not only be used for quality control of gravimetric geoid but they also can be integrated with gravity data for geoid/quasigeoid modelling. Such a model is of particular use for surveying practice. A method of quasigeoid modelling based on GPS/levelling data with support of geopotential model and gravity data was developed. The components of height anomaly are modelled with the deterministic part that consists of height anomaly based on EGM96 geopotential model and Molodensky's integral, as well as the polynomial representing trend, and from the stochastic part represented by the isotropic covariance function. Model parameters, i.e. polynomial coefficients and covariance function parameters are determined in a single process of robust estimation, resistant to the outlying measurements. The method was verified using almost a thousand height anomalies from the sites of the EUREF-POL, POLREF, EUVN'97 and WSSG (Military Satellite Geodetic Network) networks in Poland as well as geopotential model refined with gravity data in l' x l' grid. The estimated average mean square error of quasigeoid height is at the level of O.Ol m. The outlying measurements were efficiently detected.

Abstract

The present paper examines the transfer of nomino-adjectival collocations based on the word ‘femme’ (‘woman’) in the literary translation from French into Italian and Polish. The lexical connection analysed in the article can be defined as the habitual juxtaposition of a word with another word (or words) that has a significant frequency in a given language. The research corpus comprises seven Michel Houellebecq’s novels written originally in French and their Italian and Polish versions. The theoretical part of the paper aims to present phraseotranslation and phraseotraductol-ogy, which are the new subbranches in phraseology. Then, the empirical part proposes the analysis of techniques used in transferring collocations.

Abstract

The article deals with the representation of the colour bilyi (white) in the idiolect of the prominent Ukrainian writer Vasyl Stefanyk. His peculiar writing manner has been the subject of numerous studies since the publication of his first short stories. Although most of these studies did not encompass the full collection of his literary works, with a lot of them being edited during Soviet times. Therefore, the research complements previous studies conducted on the corpus of the collection of his short stories published during his lifetime. Methods of linguistic stylistics, statistics (in terms of statistical parameters of the collocational compatibility and a comparative analysis of the use of the colour bilyi (white)), concept studies and corpus linguistics have been employed. The methods applied revealed high‑ and low‑frequency word combinations for the word bilyi (white); concepts actualized by using the lexeme under study; ethnolinguistic and literary language examples of the use of the color as compared to the context used in the short stories. Proposed is a structure of the entry word bilyi (white) for Vasyl Stefanyk’s vocabulary.

Abstract

German academic language contains far more phrasemes than it used to be assumed. Apart from specialist expressions, there are many collocations, idioms and pragmatic phrasemes, which perform a number of textual functions. Scientific discourse has received an increased interest lately, however, no study of body-part phrasemes in academic language has been conducted. This paper presents an analysis of occurrence of phrasemes with the component “eye” in a specially created corpus of German academic texts in such branches as: linguistics, literary studies, foreign language teaching, and medicine. The paper approaches the following questions: Are such phrasemes used in scientifi c discourse and, if so, in which branches of science? What are the purposes of their use? Which phrasemes are favoured in all the analysed branches?
