Abstract

The welfare aspects of intra-European migration remain an important and controversial topic of academic and political debates. These discussions touch upon the classical ‘welfare magnet’ or ‘welfare tourism’ hypothesis. Transcending the politicised concept of ‘benefit tourism’, our paper examines how welfare-state considerations in relation to migration decisions vary across the life course. Relying on micro-level qualitative research focusing on Spanish intra-EU movers, the paper probes deeper into how individuals perceive welfare systems, analysing the subtle and nuanced meanings of different aspects of the welfare for their migration decisions. We focus more specifically on welfare provisions in terms of health care, compulsory education, child support and other care responsibilities, unemployment and pensions and retirement. Our research indicates that, in studies on the migration–welfare nexus, it is necessary to move beyond the current narrow focus on the welfare magnet hypothesis and to examine how diverse welfare arrangements continuously and dynamically set the context for migration decisions at various stages of an individual’s life. The results of our research show how features of the Spanish welfare system, in comparison to those of potential destination countries, might act as both a trigger and/or a barrier to migration. As such, we get a ‘thicker description’ of the role which welfare might play in shaping individuals’ eventual migratory aspirations and decisions.

Abstract

Early modern Spain witnessed the birth of a new social group — veterans — many of whom described their services in the form of autobiographies. Its authors reveal themselves through a narrator and self-created “me” that represents their struggle to break social barriers. On the other hand, their grief and isolation may also stem from war-infl icted trauma. This paper analyses the autobiography of Alonso de Contreras, focusing on this duality in narration, that may explain the severe situation of early modern veterans.

Abstract

The Francoist victory in the Spanish Civil war (1936–1939), subsequent dictatorship and finally the democratic transition have had a significant influence on forms of remembering and com-memorating the victims of the conflict. At first, only Francoist victims were exhumed and properly buried, while the bodies of defeated Republicans were deliberately left underground to exercise symbolical and psychological power and as one of the elements of the historical politics based on oblivion. However, the enforced erasure of those dead from society has not meant that they have been completely forgotten. The unmarked existence of mass graves has triggered different cycles of exhumation processes. The remains of Republicans were secretly and in small numbers exhumed by the families immediately after the war and during the dictatorship. In governmental efforts to fill the crypts of the monument located in the Valley of the Fallen, thousands have been exhumed since 1959, often without the knowledge and permission of surviving families. The number of private exhumations temporarily increased during the democratic transition, but the real ‘exhumations movement’ began in 2000. Only then were scientific methods deployed in the exhumations and identifications of the victims, and exhumations received wide media coverage lasting till today. Varied reasons for each phase of exhumations are critically discussed in the article to present a review of their social impact, symbolic dimension and political aim. The article further argues for the existence of a modern ‘Republican identity’ and ‘Republican nationalism’.

Abstract

This article is historical and philosophical in nature. Its purpose is to outline the most important trends and problems in the 19th-century Spanish philosophy. This philosophy has not yet been the subject of deeper analyses, especially in Polish literature on the subject. This is a major oversight, because the nineteenth century is the time of the impressive growth of modern social, political, legal, moral and intelectual structures in Spain. An important role in their development was played by Spanish philosophers and their reception of modern European philosophy and science. The reception was accompanied by numerous disputes and discussions about the condition of the Spanish culture and its possible development directions.

Abstract

The problem of freedom features prominently in many great novels, and Don Quixote, as any attentive reader will know, is no exception. Cervantes was deeply concerned with that issue, and, what is also known, he had an abiding interest in Erasmianism, a set of beliefs and attitudes espoused by his tutor Juan López de Hoyos. The Erasmian connect-ion can be traced back not to the writer's biography but also to various points in his work. This article examines Cervantes' handling of the theme of freedom in Don Quixote in such a way that each of the issues can be taken up for further, in-depth analysis. They range from religion and society in Renaissance Spain, the role of women and their pursuit of emancipation, the vogue for transgression of literary norms and conventions, excessive wealth and social inequalities to the Erasmian affirmation of free will. All of these problems are presented here just in outline. Detailed and exhaustive analyses will, hope-fully, follow in the future.
