Abstract

This paper is a case study conducted to present an approach to the process of designing

new products using virtual prototyping. During the first stage of research a digital geometric

model of the vehicle was created. Secondly it underwent a series of tests utilising the

multibody system method in order to determine the forces and displacements in selected

construction nodes of the vehicle during its movement on an uneven surface. In consequence

the most dangerous case of loads was identified. The obtained results were used to conduct

detailed strength testing of the bicycle frame and changes its geometry. For the purposes

of this case study two FEA software environments (Inventor and SolidWorks) were used. It

has been confirmed that using method allows to implement the process of creating a new

product more effectively as well as to assess the influence of the conditions of its usage more

efficiently. It was stated that using of different software environments increases the complexity

of the technical process of production preparation but at the same time increases the

certainty of prototype testing. The presented example of simulation calculations made for

the bicycle can be considered as a useful method for calculating other prototypes with high

complexity of construction due to its systematized character of chosen conditions and testing

procedure. It allows to verify the correctness of construction, functionality and perform

many analyses, which can contribute to the elimination of possible errors as early as at the

construction stage.

Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have been gaining popularity in recent years due to patent releases – and in effect – better accessibility of the technology. One of the most popular AM technologies is fused deposition modeling (FDM), which is used to manufacture products out of thermoplastic polymers in a layer-by-layer manner. Due to the specificity of the method, parts manufactured in this manner tend to have non-isotropic properties. One of the factors influencing the part’s mechanical behavior and quality is the thermoplastic material’s bonding mechanism correlated with the processing temperature, as well as thermal shrinkage during processing. In this research, the authors verified the suitability of finite element method (FEM) analysis for determining PET-G thermal evolution during the process, by creating a layer transient heat transfer model, and comparing the obtained modelling results with ones registered during a real-time process recorded with a FLIR T1020 thermal imaging camera. Our model is a valuable resource for providing thermal conditions in existing numerical models that connect heat transfer, mesostructure and AM product strength, especially when experimental data is lacking. The FE model presented reached a maximum sample-specific error of 11.3%, while the arithmetic mean percentage error for all samples and layer heights is equal to 4.3%, which the authors consider satisfactory. Model-to-experiment error is partially caused by glass transition of the material, which can be observed on the experimental cooling rate curve after processing the temperature signal.

Abstract

In the past decades, Mg alloys have been studied intensively as potential orthopedic applications. The present research work, the FEA of the obtained contact stresses in the case of the load applied on Mg-0.5Ca-xMn alloys has been investigated. It has been used the NCB Curved Femur Shaft Plate type as a model in order to establish the necessary modeling parameters. The objective of the present work was to highlight the strain values at the contact point on the surface of the Mg-0.5Ca-xMn alloys. The results showed that the highest stresses observed near the gaps of the plate and in the screws. It means that all mechanical loads are sustained by the plate and screws, and the patient’s femur can be recovered.

Abstract

The techniques of micro and nano structurization of surfaces of various materials are utilized in electronics and medicine. Such procedure as wet and dry etching allows to fabricate protruded or recessed micro and nanostructures on the surface. In the paper some examples of utilization of a surface structurization, known from literature, are described. Some structurization methods and experimental results for fabrication of the arrays of sharp microtips are presented. Wet and/or dry etching, and thermal oxidation process were used to form the arrays of sharp gated and non-gated, protruded or recessed silicon microtips on silicon wafer. For the first time, the arrays of silicon carbide (SiC) microtips on glass wafer have been produced by use of the transfer mold technique. Arrays of sharp microtips are used as field electron emission cathodes for vacuum microelectronics devices. Some electron emission measurements for these cathodes have been carried out. New application of silicon microtips array in biochemistry has been tested with satisfactory results.

Abstract

Featured with a higher velocity, increased power handling capability, and better aging behavior, surface transverse wave (STW) shows more promising prospects than Rayleigh wave nowadays in various sensing applications. The need to design, optimize, and fabricate the related devices motivates the development of modeling and simulation. For this reason, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) simulation of STW on quartz, considering the crystal cut angle and the electrode effects, is presented in this study. Firstly, we investigated the effects of quartz’s cut angle on the generated waves. Here, the polarized displacements were analyzed to distinguish the wave modes. Secondly, the investigations of the electrode effects on the polarized displacement, phase velocity, and electromechanical coupling factor ( K2) were carried out, for which different material and thickness configurations for the electrodes were considered. Thirdly, to examine the excitation conditions of the generated waves, the admittance responses were inspected. The results showed that not only the crystal cut angle but also the density and the acoustic impedance of the interdigital transducer (IDT) material have a strong influence on the excited waves. This article is the first to analyze STWs considering quartz’s cut angle and electrode effect through a 3D FE model. It could provide a helpful and easy way to design, optimize, and fabricate the related surface acoustic wave devices.

Abstract

Mufflers are popular in the suppression of noise levels coming from various machinery. The most common parameters for the evaluation of the performance of mufflers are transmission loss, noise level, and insertion loss. The transmission loss is evaluated for tapered side outlet muffler using finite element analysis without considering the fluid-structure interaction. This study includes analytical modelling and acoustic modelling of the side outlet muffler and transmission loss is in excellent agreement with the reference paper. The feasibility of the acoustic model is also verified with the experimental work on simple expansion chamber muffler. The same finite element analysis is extended for the tapered side outlet muffler. The transmission loss of the tapered side outlet muffler in the given frequency range is found 8.96 dB better than the side outlet muffler. The acoustic pressure level and sound pressure level contours for the tapered side outlet muffler give a clear picture of wave propagation inside the muffler. The effect of the cut-off frequency on the transmission loss of the tapered side outlet muffler can be seen from the contours. This study can be helpful in the determination of the performance of the mufflers in terms of transmission loss, the performance of mufflers above cut-off frequency, and design improvements in the muffler to avoid the higher-order modes of the sound wave.

Abstract

The following work gives the details of the modelling, simulation, and testing of a small portable gravitational water vortex (GWV) based power plant. The gravitation water vortex is an ideal source of renewable energy for rural areas that have a small body of flowing water. For this purpose, we have selected a small size for the vortex chamber that enables it to form a vortex with limited amounts of water. The paper gives the details of the simulation of the GWV in COMSOL FEA software and the parameters that were chosen for optimization. These parameters were the height of the vortex chamber, the number of blades, the length of the blades, and the tilt angle of the blades. These parameters were systematically varied step by step, to observe their effect on the speed of the rotor. The results of the parametric sweep that was performed on all the parameters are also presented. Based on the simulation results an optimal set of parameters was chosen for the physical implementation of the GWV. The paper also goes into the details of the construction of the physical GWV, the experimental setup that was devised for the testing and verification of the simulation results.

Abstract

This paper is focusing on 3D Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) based modelling of protrusions as defects or imperfections in the XLPE high voltage cable. This study is aiming to examine the impact, protrusions have on the initiation of partial discharges. Spherical and ellipsoidal protrusions with different sizes at the conductor screen of the high voltage cable is an essential content of this paper. In addition, a spherical gas-filled void is placed inside and outside the protrusions, and a water tree produced from protrusions is under consideration. The partial discharge influence taking place at the protrusions and the stress enhancement factor is determined for all the variations mentioned to quantify the rise in the inception of partial discharges due to the protrusions.

Abstract

The current design codes recommend designing the building structures based on the assumption avoiding the disproportionate to the initial cause damage during accidental situation. As a main strategy to mitigate a progressive collapse an alternative load path method is recommended. Flush and extended bolted end-plate joint to connect beam-to-column were experimentally tested. Hierarchical validation of joint FEM models based on experimental test results were performed. The numerical dynamic analysis by finite element method of selected steel frame under column loss scenario is presented. The planar 2D model of frame were used. Shell elements for beams and columns and solid elements for joints were employed respectively. Nonlinear material and geometry were applied in the analysis. Johnson-Cook model was used to describe the change of steel parameters by dynamic Increase Factor (DIF). The Rayleigh model to include the damping effects in the analysis was used. The dynamic analysis was performed with the use of Abaqus/Explicit module. Main conclusion of presented research it that to achieve the required level of robustness, bolted beam-to-column joints with extended end-plate of thickness more than 15 mm should be used.

Abstract

The paper describes the recent developments of Hybrid Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (HFRP) and nano-Hybrid Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (nHFRP) bars. Hybridization of less expensive basalt fibres with carbon fibres leads to more sustainable alternative to Basalt-FRP (BFRP) bars and more economically-efficient alternative to Carbon-FRP (CFRP) bars. The New-Developed HFRP bars were subjected to tensile axial loading to investigate its structural behaviour. The effect of hybridization on tensile properties of HFRP bars was verified experimentally by comparing the results of tensile test of HFRP bars with non-hybrid BFRP bars. It is worth to mention that the difference in obtained strength characteristics between analytical and numerical considerations was very small, however the obtained results were much higher than results obtained experimentally. Authors suggested that lower results obtained experimentally can be explained by imperfect interphase development and therefore attempted to improve the chemical cohesion between constituents by adding nanosilica particles to matrix consistency.
