Abstract

The author states that the language functions in the service to the thought; it organizes the course of our thought and enables transfer of information. To attain this purpose, it has two mechanisms at its disposal: 1. lexicalisation, which enables us to give form to the results of our conceptualisation of the world, and 2. grammaticalization, which ensures that the information most important to the successful course of the linguistic communication gets regular transparent surface categorial markers (= markers of the so‑called grammatical categories). She discusses parallels and differences in the functioning of these two mechanisms in Polish and in Macedonian.

Abstract

This volume, a collection of articles by Svetlana Tolstaya, is representative of the Moscow ethnolinguistic school, whose main goal (as was the intention of its founder, Nikita I. Tolstoy) is to reconstruct the spiritual ancestry of Slavs from both historical data and contemporary dialectological and ethnographic records. The rich and varied achievements of the Moscow ethnolinguistic school and specifically Svetlana Tolstaya are reviewed here, along with her contribution to building Polish‑Russian scholarly cooperation. The examples of mir, sud'ba, *svojь are used to illustrate the advantages of the analytical method employed by the author, i.e. semantic reconstruction within semantic microfields.

Abstract

The article is a successive part of the considerations on language contacts in relation to lexis. Analysed are words characteristic of the Polish‑Eastern Slavic borderland, where it is difficult to unequivocally decide whether they are borrowings, references, or examples of the shared Slavic heritage. The following names were interpreted in this respect: binduga ‘a place by the river where wood is deposited for floating, rafts are made and launched’, chaszcze ‘thicket, bushes, scrub’, chudoba ‘livestock’, chusta ‘a sheet of linen or other clothing fabric’, chusty ‘linen (to be washed)’; chołosznie ‘trousers’, kołosza, chołosza ‘trouser leg’, łukno and ustaw ‘vessels for honey storage’ and at the same time ‘units of measurement of honey’, miękiny ‘chaff’, miękuszka ‘bread pupl’; nawleczka, nawłoka, nawłoczka ‘pillowcase, duvet cover’, ‘furniture cover’; niewiasta, niewiastka ‘daughter‑in‑law’, żmykać ‘hand‑wash’. A detailed tracing of the geography, development of individual forms, directions of the inflow of words discussed in the text shows the multiplicity of ways in which individual lexical items penetrate borderland dialect systems. The most interesting examples are those in which the same development outcome is triggered by completely different phonetic processes.

Abstract

Slavic‑Turkish linguistic relations are generally only discussed unilaterally, focusing on the Turkish influence on Slavic and neglecting the opposite direction. Thus far, no more than two relatively extensive essays (the larger one counting 44 pages) have been devoted to Slavic loanwords in Turkish. The present paper aims to outline the state of research on this topic. It begins with a comparison of the two essays, then it examines several of somewhat atypical words, as well as a handful of suffixes, and it closes with a very brief presentation of the Slavic influence on case government of Gagauz verbs.

Abstract

Maciej Rak's book is a very reliable and well‑structured study, based on unknown manuscripts by Jan Karłowicz, found in 2017 in the Scientific Archive of the Polish Academy of Sciences (AN PAN) and the Archive of the Polish Academy of Learning (PAU) in Kraków. An in‑depth analysis of Karłowicz's archives, i.e. the files of Lexicon of Polish Dialects [ Słownik gwar polskich], Lexicon of Polish Mythology [ Słownik mitologii polskiej] and the Little Lexicon of Lithuanian Mythology [ Słowniczek mitologii litewskiej], carried out on the broad comparative background, allows us to take a broader look at the scholar's achievements in the field of Polish dialectology as well as at his pioneering role in developing the concept of an ethnolinguistic lexicon. The reviewed study shows Karłowicz as a researcher who perfectly understands the linguistic and cultural realities of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Lithuanian aspirations to construct their own identity, separate from the Polish one.
The monograph Jan Karłowicz in the Light of Archival Materials restores this nineteenth‑century researcher with broad humanistic horizons to his proper place and rank in the history of science, not only in linguistics. It provides accurate arguments for re‑evaluating a very critical review of the Lexicon of Polish Dialects, published by Kazimierz Nitsch in 1911. For a long time, this criticism had had a very negative impact on the general assessment of Karłowicz's output by other linguists. All the more, we need to appreciate Maciej Rak's insightful attempt of breaking the aforementioned negative opinion and providing new interpretation of Karłowicz's unpublished works, that can be seen as a valuable heritage of the culture created during the period of Partitions of Poland.

Abstract

The S. Torkar book that is discussed and reviewed in this article deals with historical anthroponymy and toponymy of eastern Tolminsko region in north-western Slovenia.
Written with the diligence and meticulousness of a Benedictine monk, the monograph features a wide‑ranging array of material, multiple sources and extensive subject literature, state‑of‑the‑art onomastic and general linguistic methodology, references to general Slavic language and linguistic, use of historical and ethnographic knowledge, and precision shown by the use of, among others, the statistical method I believe that this book is an eminent piece of scholarly literature.

Abstract

The next three issues of the second volume “Plants” of the “Dictionary of Folk Stereotypes and Symbols”, published in Lublin under the editorship of prof. E. Bartminsky, are devoted to the topics"Herbs","Fruit and coniferous trees",-"Deciduous trees". Like the previous issues, they are a valuable contribution to the study of Polish and Slavic folk culture, as well as to the development of such a complex discipline as ethnobotany. They also provide rich material for linguistic studies of Polish and Slavic phytonymy, since they contain a rich dialect corpus of plant names and related ethnographic and folklore contexts. But the important thing is that the Lublin dictionary gives researchers a new method of ethnolinguistic lexicography, which can be successfully applied to the study of other Slavic and non‑Slavic languages and cultural traditions.

Abstract

The aim of the discussed and reviewed books is to describe repetitions in Polish. Different classifications of repetitions are given and described in detail in the monography. The Lexicon is devoted to concrete repetitive units: 1) lex-icalized repetitions, 2) operations, 3) universal repetitions for different languages. The research was based on the material of National Corpus of Polish. Both reviewed books are unique contributions to Polish syntax, semantics, lexicography and pragmatics.

Abstract

The publication contains reprints of articles written by Prof. Hanna Popowska-‑Taborska in 2010–2018. Part of the book presents the results of her research on the folk Kashubian lexis, its relation to the vocabulary of other Slavic languages, and new etymological contributions. An important part of the publication is a discussion of the formation of the contemporary Kashubian literary language, with a focus on a critical analysis of its lexis, including numerous neologisms, which was mainly carried out on the basis of a translation Adam Mickiewicz’s poem “Pan Tadeusz”. The analysis also presents the author’s observations about the morphological structure of these neologisms. Furthermore, the publication provides detailed information about the first extensive books on linguistics written in Kashubian, as well as the author's ideas about the future etymological dictionary of the Kashubian language. There are also reflections on the linguistic image of the world that can be observed both in folk Kashubian and the Kashubian literary language. The book is supplemented by a bibliography of the author's work on Kashubian.

Abstract

The author considers problems of the book by Krystyna Waszakowa on the cognitive and communicative aspects of the study of modern Polish word-‑formation. The researcher focuses her attention on the possibility of using the cognitive semantics model of Ronald Langacker and the cognitive‑discourse model of Elena Kubryakova for the analysis of mechanisms of forming the semantics of word‑formation derivatives. Perspectives of the cognitive-‑communicative approach to the study of modern Polish word‑formation derivation Krystyna Waszakowa discusses in connection with the achievements of Slavic descriptive and structural derivatology.

Abstract

This article is a contribution to the historical lexicology of the Proto‑Slavic language. It analyzes the etymologies of 110 Proto‑Slavic lexemes in the field of topography and hydrography and classifies them into chronological layers. It draws a distinction between lexemes inherited from the Proto‑Indo‑European language and the Balto‑Slavic community and the numerous lexemes that were innovated during different periods of the Proto‑Slavic history. Some of these lexemes, created on the basis of Indo‑European roots and lexemes, must have arisen in the early period of the Proto‑Slavic language, though many more lexemes have a Slavic motivation. They developed in a later period of the Proto‑Slavic history or possibly at the time when the Proto‑Slavic language began to split into dialects. Lexemes without certain etymology have been addressed in the article separately.

Abstract

The numerals in question are used to number the pages of a medieval Latin manuscript. These are cardinal numerals, transcribed as follows: edno, četiry, pęt, šest, sedem, osem, devęt, desęt. In addition, two ordinal numerals, drugi and tretiji, also appear there. The words analysed here are undoubtedly Slavic numerals, but it is not possible to assign them with certainty to a specific Slavic language. The most probable theory of their origin links them to the Slovenian dialectal area in Carinthia (mostly due to attested continuation of Proto‑Slavic * ę, the eno < edno numeral and the phonetic spelling of the ordinal numeral as tretji), although a Polish linguistic substrate cannot be definitely ruled out due to attested nasal vowels.

Abstract

The article focuses on the relationship between predicate‑argument (semantic) structure of verbs and their syntactic properties. This investigation concentrates on the semantic structure of the Polish verb rozmyślić się (‘to change one’s mind’) as a predicate of higer order (Px, q) and its syntactic characteristic. The analisys demonstrates that the content of the propositional argument q is expressed mainly in the context of the sentence and this fact makes the verb rozmyślić się an exceptional unit of the higer order preditcate set. The verb rozmyślić się is compared with the Polish and Bulgarian possible equivalents: zrezygnować and откажа се.

Abstract

Connection of etymology and dialect lexicography is bilateral: progress of etymological investigations leads to the analysis of dialectal vocabulary, and composition of the dictionary of many / all dialects of some language requires standardization of initial records. Standardization presupposes removal of specific dialectal structural / phonetic modifications and consideration of the history of language. So, the attraction to etymological analysis of dialect words is useful and even inevitable. The author offers possible solutions of these methodological problems.

Abstract

The purpose of the article is a comparison between DC/DC topologies with a wide input voltage range. The research also explains how the implementation of GaN E‑HEMT transistors influences the overall efficiency of the converter. The article presents a process of selection of the most efficient topology for stabilization of the battery storage voltage (9 V – 36 V) at the level of 24 V, which enables the usage of ultracapacitor energy storage in a wide range of applications, e.g., in automated electric vehicles. In order to choose the most suitable topology, simulation and laboratory research were conducted. The two most promising topologies were selected for verification in the experimental model. Each of the converters was constructed in two versions: with Si and with GaN E-HEMT transistors. The paper presents experimental research results that consist of precise power loss measurements and thermal analysis. The performance with an increased switching frequency of converters was also examined.

Abstract

With the continuous advances in mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSNs), the research community has responded to the challenges and constraints in the design of these networks by proposing efficient routing protocols that focus on particular performance metrics such as residual energy utilization, mobility, topology, scalability, localization, data collection routing, Quality of Service (QoS), etc. In addition, the introduction of mobility in WSN has brought new challenges for the routing, stability, security, and reliability of WSNs. Therefore, in this article, we present a comprehensive and meticulous investigation in the routing protocols and security challenges in the theory of MWSNs which was developed in recent years.

Abstract

In this article, we propose a new stopping criterion for turbo codes. This criterion is based on the behaviour of the probabilistic values alpha 'α' calculated in the forward recursion during turbo decoding. We called this criterion Sum-α. The simulation results show that the Bit Error Rates BER are very close to those of the Cross-Entropy CE criterion with the same average number of iterations.

The high-speed of train (HST) in combination with the high carrier frequency of HST systems leads to the severe inter carrier interference (ICI) in the HST orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (HST-OFDM) systems. To avoid the complexity in OFDM receiver design for ICI eliminations, the OFDM system parameters such as symbol duration, signal bandwidth, and the number of subcarriers should be chosen appropriately. This paper aims to propose a process of HSTOFDM system performance investigation to determine these parameters in order to enhance spectral efficiency and meet a given quality-of-service (QoS) level. The signal-to-interferenceplus- noise ratio (SINR) has been used as a figure of merit to analyze the system performance instead of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as most of recent research studies. Firstly, using the nonstationary geometry-based stochastic HST channel model, the SINR of each subcarrier has been derived for different speeds of the train, signal bandwidths, and number of subcarriers. Consequently, the system capacity has been formulated as the sum of all the single channel capacity from each sub-carrier. The constraints on designing HST-OFDM system parameters have been thoughtfully analyzed using the obtained expressions of SINR and capacity. Finally, by analyzing the numerical results, the system parameters can be found for the design of HSTOFDM systems under different speeds of train. The proposed process can be used to provide hints to predict performance of HST communication systems before doing further high cost implementations as hardware designs.
