Abstract

This article examines the occasional verse published by the daily Czas [Time] in 1864–1879, i.e. over a decade and a half after the suppression of the January Rising. These texts, which feature both solemn occasions and local ephemera, present us with a unique chronicle of life of Cracow and its environs. In addition to listing all the relevant texts, the article attempts to identify their authors, i.e. unlock their initials or pseudonyms, to outline the conventions and genological peculiarities of that verse, and to gauge the attitudes of the Cracovians towards the question of Poland’s independence, Romanticism, patriotism as well as some well-known authority figures.

Abstract

The article analyzes the content of the first (single) issue Phoenix, a magazine of esoteric philosophy published in 1937. Its selection of philosophic and literary works was (co)edited by Wacław Liwski, an esotericist and popularizer of the theosophical thought of Helena Roerich. Liwski is linked by some with the novelist Władysław Reymont.

Abstract

A volume of poems Życia mego kwiat [ The Flower of My Life] by Maria Czajkowska, née Grabińska, published posthumously in 1921 – alongside her brother's (Stefan Grabiński) horror play Ciemne siły [ Dark Forces] – includes just over twenty poems, mostly sonnets, written in the poetic style characteristic of the Young Poland movement. Most of them seem to have been written between 1917 and 1918, after the death of Maria Czajkowska’s sister Jarosława; yet even those that may predate that tragic event are steeped in a mood of unrelieved melancholy and grief. Together, they can be read as a record of the poet’s spiritual biography, dominated by the trauma of waiting for death and the burden of a miserable and unhappy life. With her allegiance to Young Poland's mannered style, replete with metaphors of illness, demise and destruction, Czajkowska may appear outmoded in the post-war literary scene, and yet her poems cannot be denied an originality and authenticity of their own. Moreover, her dark introvertism is not unlike the Gothic strain of her brother’s popular fiction.

Abstract

The discovery of some hitherto unknown documents relating to Bolesław Leśmian’s family has made it possible to re-read his autobiographical poems as responses to circumstances and events from the poet’s real life. An analysis of his poems in the light of the information supplied by the newly-discovered source shows that they provide a thoroughly accurate record of events as they happened, especially deaths. Not only do the deaths of his mother, father and his siblings hurt him deeply and foreshadow the end of his own life, but also make him feel guilty for not being able to remember them properly: as his memory fails him, they are condemned to a ‘second death’.

Abstract

This article presents the results of a genealogical and biographical archive search to collect reliable evidence (chiefl y birth certifi cates) and reconstruct Maria Konopnicka’s family tree on as broad as a scale as possible, inclusive of both the agnatic and cognitive lines (with the exception of data available from offi cial heraldry guides). On the strength of the newly obtained data we may now introduce some corrections into the established version of Maria Konopnicka’s biography and identify a number of persons from Maria Konopnicka’s circle of friends, acquaintances and correspondents.

Abstract

This articles explores the life and work of Elżbieta Glaize Walkerowa, a forgotten poet from the early19th century and owner of a girls’ boarding school in Lwów. Hitherto unknown archival sources, which have been used to reconstruct her biography, reveal that she was a close relative of François Glaize, Poland's most eminent tapestry-weaver, with connections to the House of Działyński (the Trojanów branch). The second part the article focuses on Elżbieta Glaize's 1801 debut poetry volume Pierwiastki mojej muzy [ Elements of My Muse]. The poems, written in the sentimental style which was in fashion at that time, represent the sensitivity and worldview of a young woman who, having been raised in a home steeped in literary culture, was keen to showcase her own literary ambition.

Abstract

Little is known about the genealogy and the biography of Eleonora Ziemięcka née Gagatkiewicz. Poland’s first female philosopher (1819–1869). This article, the fruit of extensive archival research, now supplies the missing data. It not only fi xes her birth date – hitherto unknown – but also gives us an insight into the circumstances and reasons of her being brought up away from her parents. It has also been possible to collect a good deal of information about her relations, especially the Gagatkiewicz family (she was the granddaughter of Walenty Gagatkiewicz, the most distinguished physician of late 18th century Warsaw), and the family connections and the profi le of her husband, the portrait painter Antoni Ziemięcki.

Abstract

This artical is a survey of hitherto unresearched Prątka Jednodniówka [ The Mayfly], a magazine edited by the patients of the TB sanatorium at Bystra Śląska near Bielsko-Biała and published in 1931–1935. Five issues of the magazine stored at the Cieszyn Library were examined for their literary content, made up almost exclusively by humor and satire. The gelotherapeutic profile makes the magazine unique among similar publications associated with healthcare institutions.
