Biblioteka Rady Miasta Gdańska, obok rękopisów oraz druków, gromadziła kolekcje naturaliów, a także obiektów artystycznych o charakterze encyklopedycznym, które pozostawały w ścisłej łączności z działalnością książnicy. Pochodzące głównie z darów zbiory swym profilem bliskie były tworzonym od końca XVI wieku kolekcjom o charakterze publicznym, służącym nowożytnej edukacji i rozwojowi nauki. Przy kategoryzacji obiektów z gdańskich zbiorów kierowano się kryteriami funkcjonującymi już w XVI wieku, wyróżniając naturalia (zwierzęta, rośliny, minerały), instrumenty matematyczne, numizmaty antyczne i współczesne, artificialia (dzieła sztuki) oraz sprzęt sal bibliotecznych. Zgodnie z nimi w 1701 roku wykonano odpowiedni, odrębny inwentarz, zachowany w zbiorach Biblioteki. Pod względem różnorodności obiektów i szczegółowości ich opisów zbiór biblioteczny przewyższa identyfikowane dotąd gdańskie kolekcje prywatne. Wśród bibliotecznych naturaliów wyróżniały się minerały wraz z kilkoma okazami koralowca i bursztynu. Właśnie na ich przykładzie starano się ukazać jeden z najważniejszych problemów nauki w przyrodoznawstwie XVI i XVII wieku, jakim była klasyfikacja naturaliów i znalezienie właściwych kryteriów dla ich uszeregowania.

The portrait of Heinrich Schwarzwald IV (1619–1672) was incorporated into the PAS Gdańsk Library’s collection back in 1832. Heinrich Schwarzwald IV was the founder of the book collection for the Petrischule in Gdańsk. The oil painting on canvas in a period frame with no signature was painted in the mid–1600s. Both the book collection and the portrait were actually donated to the school at St. Peter and Paul Church after the death of Heinrich Schwarzwald IV’s nephew, Heinrich Schwarzwald V, in 1708. For a long period of time the uncle’s merits were attributed to the nephew due to the same names. In 1860 Gotthilf Löschin identified the real founder of the above mentioned library. The article, in turn, settles down the matter of the identification of the portrayed person. The painting was presumably painted by Andreas Stech (1635–1697). The source data confirm the mutual contacts between the painter and Heinrich Schwarzwald IV. Before being donated to the library, the painting underwent an intensive and thorough restoration performed by Franz Joseph Manskirch in the 1820s.

The engraving presenting a view of the interior of the Library of the Council of the City of Gdansk was made in 1687 – just like the other 56 engravings showing the city in Reinhold Curicke’s work Der Stadt Dantzig historische Beschreibung (Amsterdam and Gdansk 1687). The author of the article analysed the view in terms of its style, technique and iconography. Reaching back to 1596, she presented the circumstances in which the Library of the Council of the City of Gdansk was established in its initial location, referring to the political situation in the Commonwealth after Sigismund III Vasa, a supporter of the counter-reformation directed at the Protestant Gdansk, ascended to the throne. Analysing the artistic value of the view on the interior of the Library, the author accentuated the appropriate decorum, differentiating the engraving in question from Curicke’s other illustrations forming a part of his work. According to the author, the above resulted from the fact that the city authorities wanted to highlight the role of child-rearing, education and science in the development of Gdansk. The message was expressed in a baroquising style allegorizing the image of science. It is this intention which makes the view of the interior of the Library different from the other realistic views of the structures, fragments of the city and suburban areas of Gdansk.
