Abstract

The influence of rapid solidification from the liquid state on the structure of Al71Ni24Fe5 alloy was studied. The samples were prepared by induction melting (ingots) and high pressure die casting into a copper mold (plates). The structure was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), light microscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The mechanism of crystallization was described on the basis of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) heating and cooling curves, XRD patterns, isothermal section of Al-Ni-Fe alloys at 850°C and binary phase diagram of Al-Ni alloys. The fragmentation of the structure was observed for rapidly solidified alloy in a form of plates. Additionally, the presence of decagonal quasicrystalline phase D-Al70.83Fe9.83Ni19.34 was confirmed by phase analysis of XRD patterns, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) of transmission electron microscopy images. The metastable character of D-Al70.83Fe9.83Ni19.34 phase was observed because of the lack of thermal effects on the DSC curves. The article indicates the differences with other research works and bring up to date the knowledge about Al71Ni24Fe5 alloys produced by two different cooling rates.

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to study the effect of zinc addition on the corrosion behavior of Ca65–xMg17.5Zn17.5+x (x = 0, 2.5, 5 at.%) alloys in simulated physiological fluids at 37°C. The electrochemical measurements allowed to determine a corrosion potential, which showed a positive shift from –1.60 V for Ca65Mg17.5Zn17.5 alloy to –1.58 V for Ca60Mg17.5Zn22.5 alloy, adequately. The more significant decrease of hydrogen evolution was noticed for Ca60Mg17.5Zn22.5 alloy (22.4 ml/cm2) than for Ca62.5Mg17.5Zn20 and Ca65Mg17.5Zn17.5 samples (29.9 ml/cm2 and 46.4 ml/cm2), consequently. The corrosion products after immersion tests in Ringer’s solution during 1 h were identified by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as calcium, magnesium oxides, carbonates, hydroxides and calcium hydrate.

Abstract

The paper presents research results of multilayer systems composed of alternate Cu/Ni layers. The layers thickness obtained by the galvanic treatment was determined by using the transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction method in the grazing incidence diffraction geometry. The surface morphology was observed using scanning electron microscope with EDS microanalysis. Observation of the surface topography of systems using the atomic force microscope was also carried out.
