Abstract

The meaning of temporal distributiveness occurs either in situations in which a habitual activity is correlated with the recurrent periods of time, or in situations in which the recurrent periods of time are accompanied by an activity. The present paper is yet another contribution to a series of papers exploring temporal constructions in Polish that express the meaning of distributiveness. It focuses on the analysis of constructions such as pracować dzień w dzień, which are exponents of the so-called cyclic and distributive time.

Abstract

One of the fragments of a system of temporal meanings is distributive tense. It occurs when an activity repeats in time or the time intervals correlating with the activity are repeated. This meaning has its specifi c means of expression. The proposed draft (ending a series of articles focusing on semantics of distributiveness in Polish) concerns synonymics of distributive constructions. Part 1 of the paper focuses on the position of a nominal group in particular constructions, aspectual-temporal characteristics of verb as well as on synonymics of constructions with names of time units.

The meaning of temporal distributiveness occurs either in situations in which a habi-tual activity is correlated with the recurrent periods of time, or in situations in which the recurrent periods of time are accompanied by an activity. The proposed framework is yet another contribution to a series of papers exploring temporal constructions in Polish that express the meaning of distributiveness. It focuses on the analysis of con-structions with a noun phrase including “the instrumental case without a preposition”, such as uczyć się nocami, which are exponents of the distributive time proper.

Abstract

The semantics of temporal distributiveness comes into the fore in two cases: a) either when a habitual activity is correlated with the recurrent periods of time; b) or when the recurrent periods of time are accompanied by an activity. The present paper is yet another contribution to a series of papers exploring Polish temporal constructions with distributive meaning. It focuses on constructions with the pronoun każdy, such as (spotykamy się) w każdą sobotę (każdą sobotę).

Abstract

There are several nominal groups in contemporary Polish language, which are primarily used to convey information about date as a time of activity. The nominal groups concerned indicate temporal simultaneity of activity and temporal localiser. They include: genitive without a preposition (dnia pierwszego listopada), w+ locative case (w dniu pierwszego listopada), z+ instrumental case (z dniem pierwszego listopada), 1w + accusative case (Zaraz na pierwszego wyłożyli jej na stół pieniądze) and na + instrumental case (Zeszyt grudniowy wyszedł na dniu 31 grudnia). Only one of the aforementioned nominal groups, namely na+ instrumental case, remains to be archaic for contemporary Polish. The aim of the present paper is to determine synonymies of the aforementioned constructions and their mutual relations when expressing the meaning of date.
