Abstract

Like other harbour cities in Europe, Lisbon has an axial development anchored in pre-existing confi gurations which dot from east, more industrial areas, to the west, a more monumental and urban type. The diversity of fabrics and the overlapping of various time layers become decoded through a functional specialization infrastructural line, which, from rural, becomes increasingly infrastructured as part of the on-going reinvention of the city of Lisbon.

Abstract

The radar method, executed with the use of ground penetrating radars - the georadars, belongs to non-intrusive methods of positioning subsurface structures and objects. The direct result of the survey is the so-called radargram - a radar image, that is a vertical cross-section of the penetrated medium. It brings an information on the existence and mutual position of ground layers and subsurface structures and objects. The radargram, as the direct result of measurement, demands further processing for its interpretation and use. The consecutive steps leading from a non-metric radargram to the metric 3D model, based on corresponding surveying and georadar data are presented. The paper concentrates on the problem of broadening the scope of interpretation and applications of georadar surveys thanks to proper integration of advanced filtering programs, graphical software and programs from the CAD and SIT environment. The aim of the integration is a metric 3D model of subsurface objects and structures located with the georadar method. The ways and stages of generation of the spatial subsurface models, presented in the paper, complement surveying sources of data for thematic maps.

Abstract

The objective of this work was investigation of the growth dynamics of proteolytic bacteria and the enzymatic activity in soil for the cultivation of maize (Zea mays L.), as well as the maize yield under application of some selected organic fertilizers. Intensity and the direction of the developed changes in the soil depended on the type of applied organic fertilizer, the size of its dose introduced into the soil and on the developmental phase of the grown plant (maize). On the basis of obtained results it was found that all tested organic substances stimulated the activity of proteases. Yields ofmaize as raw material for silages obtained from soil fertilized with sewage sludge were similar to those obtained after the application of pig slurry and they exceeded maize yields harvested from other ferti I ization objects.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess the possibility of using natural carbonaceous materials such aspeat, lignite, and hard coal as low-cost sorbents for the removal of Direct Orange 26 azo dye from an aqueous solution. The adsorption kinetics and the influence of experimental conditions were investigated. The following materials were used in the research: azo dye Direct Orange 26, Spill-Sorb “Fison” peat (Alberta, Canada), lignite (Bełchatów, Poland), and hard coal (“Zofiówka” mine, Poland). The morphology and porous structure of the absorbents were tested. Dye sorption was carried out under static conditions, with different doses of sorbents, pH of the solution, and ionic strength. It was observed that the adsorption of Direct Orange 26 dye on all three adsorbents was strongly dependent on the pH of the solution, while the ionic strength of the solution did not affect the adsorption efficiency. The adsorption kinetics were consistent with the pseudo-second-order reaction model. The stage which determines the rate of adsorption is the diffusion of the dye in the near-surface layer. The process of equilibrium adsorption of Direct Orange 26 dye on all tested adsorbents is best described by the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity for peat, brown coal and hard coal was 17.7, 15.1 and 13.8 mg/g, respectively. The results indicate that peat, lignite, and hard coal can be considered as alternative adsorbents for removing azo dyes from aqueous solutions.

Abstract

The intensive use of glyphosate in agricultural areas has increased the frequency of weeds that are resistant to herbicides. Thus, this study was aimed to assess the sensitivity and resistance level of Digitaria insularis (L.) Fedde (sourgrass) populations to glyphosate. Sixty two sourgrass populations were collected from the states of Paraná and São Paulo, Brazil, and subjected to glyphosate application at 1,080 and 2,160 g of acid equivalent (a.e.) · ha–1 in screening assays. Five sourgrass populations were selected, three of which are resistant and two of which are susceptible to glyphosate, to determine the resistance factors (RFs) through dose-response studies at two phenological stages of plant growth: the 2–4-leaf stages and the 2–4-tiller stage. The trials were conducted in a greenhouse in accordance with a completely randomized design. In both trials, the control was evaluated based on the score of the visual control symptoms (VC) and the percentage of dry matter (DM) in relation to those of the control (without application). In the screening test, the data obtained for the response variables were adjusted for frequency curves by following the regression model proposed by Gompertz. The results indicated low sensitivity of D. insularis to glyphosate in 100% of the samples from areas in which soybeans are tolerant to this herbicide. Populations with susceptible plants were found in fallow areas, pasture areas and sugar cane fields. Based on the values of VC50 and DM50, the maximum RF obtained among the populations was 15. More advanced stages of development make sourgrass control difficult, requiring doses that are 3.5 times greater than those at the initial stage.

Abstract

For high speed downlinking of payload data from small satellites, a new 4×4 aperture coupled microstrip patch array antenna has been presented. The antenna is designed for the Ku band and a peak gain of 18.0 dBi is achieved within the impedance bandwidth from 11.75 GHz to 12.75 GHz. Wide bandwidth is achieved as the patch elements are excited through E-shaped slots having asymmetric side lengths and widths. Each square patch element of the array with truncated corners and appropriately placed slots generates right hand circularly polarized (RHCP) radiation with very high crosspolarization discrimination. A corporate feed network consisting of T-junctions and quarter-wave impedance transformers is developed to feed the array elements from a single coaxial port of 50 Ω. To improve the radiation from the patches and waveguiding in the feed network, two types of Rogers substrates with different dielectric constant and thickness are considered. Our proposed microstrip patch array antenna of size 7.8 cm × 6.4 cm × 0.3 cm can perform efficiently with a downlink data rate as high as 4.6 Gbps for small satellites.

Abstract

The article features a systemic approach to digitalization in mining, covering the production process, supervision and management. Business continuity management of a critical infrastructure was characterized with respect to an industrial facility, i.e. a mine. The “SILESIA” Integrated Security System was described. This solution, offered by CNP EMAG, is an example of a systemic approach successfully implemented in industry. The article includes information about the development of technological hardware solutions as well as software which is able to assess the solutions developed in the SecLab Information Security Technology Development Laboratory in the EMAG Institute.

Abstract

Investigation of leaf rust disease on spring crops of triticale (× Triticosecale Wittm.), it sdi stribution dynamics, as well as the efficacy of two fungicides, different application doses and timing was carried out at the Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture during 2000–2002. Differences in the disease development were determined by the meteorological conditions, especially the amount of rainfall, and growth stage of plants. Precipitation during 2000 was close to the mean, and the development of leaf rust was moderate. In June of 2001 the rainfall was twice as high as the norm, which created favourable conditions for pathogen development. In 2002 a long droughty period till flowering inhibited the development of leaf rust. The triazole fungicides Juventus (metkonazole 60 g l–1) and triazole and strobilurine mixture. Allegro (kresoxim-methyl 125 g l–1 + epoxikonazole 125 g l–1) were used at full, two-third and half doses once and twice. Both of the fungicides were very effective against leaf rust. Biological efficacy of Juventus applied at any dose or time against leaf rust was 88.3%–99.7%. Allegro efficacy against this disease was slightly higher 94.7%–100%. Application of 1.0; 0.75 and 0.5 l ha–1 doses twice showed a better efficacy than a single application. The higher doses of fungicides were not markedly superior to the lower ones.

Abstract

The paper describes analytical approach solving the problem of dynamic analysis of two-dimensional fields of vibrational displacements and rotations caused by magnetic forces acting on stator of AC machine. Final set of three differential equations converted into algebraic ones is given and it is confronted with numerical solutions obtained by finite element method.

Abstract

Air core solenoids, possibly single layer and with significant spacing between turns, are often used to ensure low stray capacitance, as they are used as part of many sensors and instruments. The problem of the correct estimation of the stray capacitance is relevant both during design and to validate measurement results; the expected value is so low to be influenced by any stray capacitance of the external measurement instrument. A simplified method is proposed that does not perturb the stray capacitance of the solenoid under test; the method is based on resonance with an external capacitor and on the use of a linear regression technique.

Abstract

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is the fi nal stage in several heart diseases. The diagnosis of CHF in older patients is a challenge. Preserved left ventricular systolic function is a characteristic type of CHF in seniors. The purpose of the study was to characterize elderly patients with CHF and to highlight specific features of the conditions in seniors. The most common etiology of HF in this group of patients is hypertension and coronary heart disease. In seniors atypical presentations of chronic heart failure is much more common than in younger patients. Malnutrition, limitations of exercise and sedentary lifestyles or comorbid diseases have an influence on asymptomatic, early stage of HF. Th ere are better outcomes of treatment in obese individuals. It is called the obesity paradox. Open communication with a patient and his/her family may improve their response to therapy. When heart failure becomes an incurable disease and aggressive treatment is ineffective, palliative care should be considered in end-of-life heart failure patients. The goal of treatment in the remaining moments of life last moments of life should be maximizing the patient’s comfort.

Abstract

Forests may play important role in partial neutralization of CO2 emission. To maximize their potential it is unavoidable to divide them into forests that will be allowed to evolve toward natural state and forest predisposed for timber production, supplemented with forest plantations. Natural forests store almost twice more carbon in biomass and soil than managed forests, and carbon contained in wood from plantations and timber-producing forests will be frozen long time in wooden constructions. Gasification of wood debris instead of burning will allow for production of biocarbon that added to soil will residue there through decades, and will decrease necessary amount of artificial fertilizers, which production is an important source of carbon dioxide. Forests evolving to natural state will be less prone to fire and hurricanes, and will better protect biodiversity. Presented project is not contradictory to the project “The Forest Carbon Farms” of State Forests, but allows to reach better results in shorter time and likely at lower cost.

Abstract

The article summarizes panel discussions led at the Polish Scientific Networks conference. It covers the topics of social and (un)social innovations, their sources, and applications, as well as the new approaches to the concept of the wisdom of the crowds (as opposed to swarm mentality). The article draws on academic research on trust and distrust, declining reliance on formal expertise and a turn against the science, and posttruth society phenomenon. The article concludes with observations about risk aversion in different cultures, to suggest some practical solutions in education programs, needed to address the challenges of the future.
