Abstract

Halide Edip Adıvar was one of the best‑known symbols of the modern, pro‑Western daughters of the Republic of Turkey. Through her own life and work, she exemplified how Turkish women should change. One of her greatest works is “The Daughter of Smyrna” (“Ateşten Gömlek”); its story takes place during the war of independence. Women participated in the fight and they encouraged the fighters, similarly to Ayşe, the character from the novel. They were the symbol of Anatolia and Turkey.
In the article, the context of the war of independence is briefly sketched. Then, the figure of Halide Edip is presented with the special attention paid to the period of her fight by Mustafa Kemal’s side. In the last part, the figures of the women presented in the book are analysed. The important questions asked in the article concern the similarities between the author and the characters created by her and how modern Turkish women living in the Republic of Turkey at the beginning of its existence should have looked.

Abstract

This article discusses the rheological tests and analyses based on the Schapery non-linear viscoelasticity model that were performed to study asphalt mastic behaviour under high shear stresses. Seven mineral filler types were applied in this study, including a mixed filler with hydrated lime and fillers derived from dust extraction systems. Determination of basic properties of the fillers was followed by creep and recovery tests (DSR) at different levels of shear stress conducted in accordance with a modified MSCR procedure. The first stage in the analysis was the identification of linear viscoelastic region and the non-linear viscoelasticity model parameters such as the length of the loading period, the temperature and the stress level using TTSSP (Time-Temperature- Stress Superposition Principle). Subsequent numerical simulations of strain variation with respect to stress confirmed a high degree of agreement between the non-linear viscoelasticity model and mastic sample behaviour. A strong correlation was found between the non-linear viscoelasticity parameters and mastic properties. The proposed methodology is able to quickly identify and eliminate the fillers that may contribute to HMA deformations.

Abstract

The paper presents a general idea of the acceleration test method and the design, construction and testing of the inertial dynamorneter test rig developed for small, high performance two-stroke engines. The method is universal and can be also used for four-stroke engines but it is especially useful for the two-stroke ones. The testing procedure is described and the advantages of that type of investigation method are pointed out. It has been proved that the reliability of the method is satisfactory. It was also proven that the individual construction of the inertial dynamorneter of good quality can be performed individually and that it can be a very useful investigation tool in engine tuning practice. The point has been stressed that the major advantage of that method is the possibility of the instantaneous measurement of the engine power characteristic during unsteady engine operation (acceleration) where the time for the single run does not exceed ten seconds.
